 Khajuraho

Khajuraho is the symbol of rich cultural heritage of India.
It has a number of Jain and Hindu temples and is famous for erotic sculpture.
The name Khajuraho is derived from the Hindi word 'khajur', which means 'date palm'.
It was built during the reign of Chandel Empire, between 950 and 1050 AD.



       Earlier, there were about 85 Hindu temples at Khajuraho, which degenerated due to the ravages of the nature. There are only about 22 Hindu temples left now.
It is wrongly believed that Khajuraho temples are filled with erotic sculpture.
         Erotic scenes represent a relatively small part of the carvings, but sensuous eroticism prevails in all the sculptures.
Kharjuravāhaka - It is a complex of Hindu and Jain temples of medieval period, located at Chatarpur District in Madhya Pradesh. It is about 175 km to the southeast of Jhansi. This group of monuments was built in 9th century AD.




       Khajuraho is one of the major tourist destinations in India. The place is popular and has unique erotic sculptures. It is known for its nagara-style architecture.

    Most of its temples were built by the Chandela dynasty in between 950 and 1050 CE. According to records, there were 85 temples in the Khajuraho temple site by 12th century, out of which only 20 temples have survived.


      The Khajuraho group of temples was dedicated to Hinduism and Jainism, honoring diverse religious views.

Archeological Survey of India has ranked Khajuraho temples as the best preserved monuments of antiquity.
Few temples in Khajuraho are dedicated to Jain pantheon and the rest to Hindu deities – to God’s Trio, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and various Devi forms, such as the Devi Jagadambi.
The temples are built of sandstone in different shades of buff, pink and pale yellow.
The divine sculptures in Khajuraho temples are a tribute to Life itself.
The images of Goddesses and Gods sculpted on the temple walls represent the many manifestations of the divine Shakti and Shiva, the female and male principles, the Yin and the Yang.
The rooms inside the temple are inter-connected and placed in an East/West line. Each contains an entrance, a hall, a vestibule and a sanctum

Khajuraho temples, constructed with spiral superstructures, adhere to a North Indian shikhara temple style and often to a Panchayatana plan.
